What registering a car in Germany really costs
In short
The official part is small and fixed nationwide: €30.00 for a registration at the counter, €12.80 through the internet-based procedure, €2.60 to reserve a chosen number (GebOSt fee schedule). Everything else is not an official fee: plates are embossed by private suppliers, liability insurance is a contract, a registration service is a service. In any case the real cost block is not the registration but the annual Kfz-Steuer under § 9 KraftStG: €2 per 100 cc started for petrol engines, €9.50 for diesel, plus a progressive CO₂ component above an allowance. Fully electric vehicles are exempt until 31 December 2035 at the latest.
The official part, to the cent
These amounts are in the GebOSt fee schedule. They apply nationwide and do not depend on the municipality — contrary to many pages writing “€30 to €60 depending on the Zulassungsstelle”. What actually varies is everything beside them.
- Registration or re-registration at the counter — €30.00 (no. 221.1).
- The same decision through the online procedure — €12.80 (no. 221.1.1).
- Reserving a specific number — €2.60 per number (no. 230).
- Kurzzeitkennzeichen — €10.20 (no. 221.4). Ausfuhrkennzeichen — €31.40 (no. 221.3).
What is not an official fee — and why totals diverge
- The plates themselves. They are made by private embossing shops, usually next door to the authority. There is no official price — so we quote none.
- Liability insurance. A contract whose price depends on the vehicle, the driver profile, the no-claims class and where you live. Any figure quoted without those is guesswork.
- The Hauptuntersuchung, where due. It is charged by an inspection organisation, not by the authority.
- A registration service or accompaniment. A service, not a tariff.
The real cost block: the annual Kfz-Steuer
You pay the registration once, the tax every year. For passenger cars it has two parts: a displacement component and a CO₂ component above an allowance.
| Band (g/km above the allowance) | Amount per gram |
|---|---|
| up to 115 | €2.00 |
| up to 135 | €2.20 |
| up to 155 | €2.50 |
| up to 175 | €2.90 |
| up to 195 | €3.40 |
| above | €4.00 |
The formula applies to any vehicle: displacement, fuel, CO₂ value and date of first registration are enough, and all four appear on the registration document.
What nobody can seriously quote you in advance
Two items resist any advance estimate, and anyone quoting them anyway is guessing: the insurance premium, which depends on your personal profile, and everything flowing from an incomplete file — a missing registration certificate part II, a confirmation to obtain via the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, a Hauptuntersuchung to catch up on. These rarely cost much money, but regularly cost a lot of time.
Frequently asked questions
Why does everyone write “€30 to €60”?
Because those ranges mix the official fee with the plates, and sometimes with extra operations. The registration decision itself costs €30.00 under the schedule, €12.80 online — the same nationwide.
Is German vehicle tax lower than in France or the Netherlands?
The systems are not comparable: Germany levies an annual tax on displacement and CO₂, other countries use one-off registration levies, weight components or malus systems. A blanket comparison is misleading, and we make none here.
When does the tax fall due?
Registration itself is conditional on a written authorisation to collect the tax having been given (§ 13(1) KraftStG). Without it — or without proof of an exemption — there is no registration. Collection then runs from the account given, which on the wording of the statute may be a third party's.
